CPS provide regular face-to-face educational events focusing on medication use in older people. Session are held in multiple locations around Tasmania and are aimed predominantly at nursing staff and other allied health professionals working with older people.

Annual Medications in Aged Care Seminar

A full day seminar covering many aspects of the role of medications managing common conditions in the elderly.

  • Medications in the Elderly
    • An overview of how medications work, how elderly patients absorb, metabolise, distribute and eliminate medications differently.
  • Psychotropics and Chemical Restraint in Aged Care
    • The problems with use of psychotropics in older people. What is Chemical Restraint and how should this be managed?
  • Insomnia in the Elderly
    • How sleep differs in the elderly. Problems with current “sleeping tablets”. Deprescribing of benzodiazepines.
  • Supplements – separating the wheat from the chaff
    • Multivitamins, Vitamin D, Calcium, Magnesium, B12, Thiamine, Vitamin C. When are supplements beneficial in older people, and when are they not.
